Samantha Milewicz, a senior at Byram Hills High School in Armonk, took eighth place in the final round of the competition on Tuesday, March 14, school district officials announced.
Milewicz, who had already won a $2,000 award for being named a 2023 Regeneron Top Scholar, was recognized for her neuroscience research focusing on treating traumatic brain injuries.
Her work specifically focused on a protein that is involved in brain tissue damage from such traumatic injuries and its potential for being utilized in the treatment of patients.
Stephanie Greenwald, director of the Byram Hills Authentic Science Research Program, said that the award certifies Milewicz as a rising star in the country's science community.
"Samantha has been recognized as one of the top young scientists in our country today," Greenwald said, adding, "Words cannot express how proud the entire Byram Hills community is of Samantha. Congratulations on this magnificent achievement."
In addition to Milewicz, four other Byram Hills students had been named Top Scholars in January:
- Rohini Das;
- Remi Matza;
- Lindsay Miller;
- Samantha Schaevitz.
The school itself also received $10,000 from the contest.
